Charles has been a tireless advocate for his son and the others in US Navy Seal Team 6 (Team 2 and more) who lost their lives on August 6, 2011 on Extortion 17 in Afghanistan. The incident was a devastating loss of life during a mission. Unfortunately, there were many more questions than answers left in the incident's wake. Charles and others have fought to get the truth about what happened involving one of the most elite US Military units.
Seal Team 6 has been cloaked in secrecy for obvious reasons. Over the years it has been involved in the highest value target missions in history. Questions have arisen indicating the fact that the team has been expanded, overtaxed and stretched outside of ethical and humanly safe boundaries.
Sometimes "bad things" must be done in order for a civil society to survive. Reasonable oversight is necessary to preserve liberty and civil rights, the foundation of our nation and reason that our brave men and women fight. Such actions become troubling when they are repeatedly performed without that oversight. It becomes very difficult to verify “right” and “proper purpose” when you are “simply following orders”. The very nature of the structure (necessary) of the military and its operations is “following orders”, not blindly, but with the “full faith” in the command organization. This is the conundrum that is faced when repeated questions arise as a result of undeniable failures, some of which result in loss of our brave warriors.
Incidents such as that which cost 31 soldiers of the USA their lives on Aug. 6, 2011 should serve to fuel careful, fair scrutiny and double our efforts to conform to the demands that protect our people and limit the possibility of future losses. It is our duty to those who have fallen to work in their memory to do whatever we can to stop others from meeting the same fate.
Charles and others have pushed for answers. Now Charles has focused the Foundation that he started in his son Michael J Stranger’s name to help provide grief counseling and support to others survivors of our troops lost to such tragedies.
