You Can't Speak for Yourself or Worse

It is unfortunate that most people will make every possible excuse or distraction in order to avoid making the most important paperwork of their life. No I am not talking about your marriage license, no not your mortgage, I am talking about a combined advanced directive (or DNR), a will, and other critical plans for themselves. Most people act as though if you discuss the idea you will make them happen.

So I have a question for you. Say today while you are in your car, sitting at an intersection, waiting for the traffic light to change to green, in a split second, a tractor trailer fails to negotiate the turn and slams, at 40 mph, directly into the driver’s door of your vehicle? Suddenly you are seriously injured, incapable of speaking for yourself. Who is your designated patient advocate? How will the rescue services and hospital know who to call? Do they put you on life support? Do you have DNR? Are you diabetic? What are you allergic to? Who do they notify? If you die do they bury you in a pauper’s grave? That is just the start.

If you die, what happens to your family? Who is going to finalize your life? Your financials? Deal with the creditors? What happens to your personal affects? Your car? Your home? That is why you need a will. You need to clearly define what you want to happen, who is to be in charge. If your incapacity is only temporary, you want to still have something to return to. Do you know that thousands of people each year lose everything while they are in the hospital? When they finally are lucky enough to survive and convalesce they return to have nothing. They have lost their house or apartment. They have bills piled up, the utilities are cut off and often, if they can return to it, they have lost their job.

This show was intended to make you think about these things. If you call yourself a prepper, a survivalist, or simply a prepared person you need to get on it and get your … in order!!!!
