Best Tales of the Yukon
Robert W Service - Poet
Even if you don't like poetry Robert W Service may be of interest. He was different. He said that people did not want poetry they wanted verse, and thus he wrote verse.
Service became known as "the people's poet". He and Jack London put Alaska on the map. He was a socialiist and Marxist. He became a millionaire by 1912 as a banker in Canada. By the 1930's he was frequenting Russia and ended up trapped their after the treaty between USSR and Germany prior to World War II and escaped to California with his family.
Service said,
"The only society I like," he once said, "is that which is rough and tough - and the tougher the better. That's where you get down to bedrock and meet human people."
He found that kind of society in the Yukon gold rush, and he immortalized it.
